Š’má [py] suo3zhi1 zhang4 [wg] so-chih-chang [ko] sojijang [ja] ƒVƒ‡ƒ`ƒVƒ‡ƒE shochishou ||| The "hindrance by the known", also known as "hindrance to wisdom" ’qá. Also interpreted as "hindrances to knowing," or "hindrances to omniscience" (j~neya-aavara.na). This hindrance to enlightenment is none other than our own knowledge, our own habituated way of knowing. That is, it is exactly what we think we know, which keeps us from enlightenment. The concept is originally developed in Consciousness-only texts such as the Yogaacaarabhuumi-`saastra àŽt’n˜_, but appears in various forms in later East Asian works such as the Awakening of Faith ‹NM˜_ and Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment š¢æSãS. The most concentrated discussion of the Two Hindrances is to be found in Wônhyo's Doctrine of the Two Hindrances (Ijang ûi: “ñá‹`). This hindrance is one of the so-called "two-hindrances" “ñá being established in contrast to the "hindrance by defilements" (fannaozhang ”Ïœ»á) which can be eradicated by the imperfect contemplation techniques of `sraavakas and pratyekabuddhas. The hindrance by the known is eliminated only by advanced bodhisattvas who have a penetrating experience of emptiness. [Dictionary References] naka685c [Credit] acm(entry) cw(py)
