Ž–á [py] shi4zhang4 [wg] shih-chang [ko] sajang [ja] ƒWƒVƒ‡ƒE jishou ||| The "phenomenal hindrance." Along with the "noumenal hindrance" (lizhang —á) one of the two general categories of the obstructions which impede the attainment of enlightenment. The phenomenal hindrances are those of the human passions of like and dislike, and all other related addictive or painful emotions which keep sentient beings bound in the cycle of life and death. Therefore, this hindrance is analogous to the "hindrance of defilement" (fannaozhang ”Ïœ»á) of the school of Consciousness-only. Compared to the hindrance of principle, it is relatively external and superficial, and thus may be overcome by the practices of the two vehicles “ñ˜©. (š¢æSãS, T 842.17.916b20 ff.)
