馬祖道一 [py] Ma3zu3 Dao4yi1 [wg] Ma-tsu Tao-i [ko] Majodoil [ja] バソドウイチ Baso douichi ||| Mazu Daoyi (707-786); One of the most influential Chan masters in the history of Chinese Buddhism, originally the student of Huairang 懷讓 of Nanyue 南嶽. He is said to have had some 139 disciples--many of them who would become eminent teachers in their own right. His style of Chan had a deep influence on early Korean Sôn Buddhism, as many early Korean masters studied under Mazu and his students. [Credit] acm(entry) cw(py)
